30 Second Spot, 1982

Inverting the form, style and time frame of commercial television advertising, Logue has produced a unique series of dynamic video portraits of avant-garde artists, writers, musicians and performers. In 30 Second Spots: New York, which Logue terms "commercials for artists," each of the succinct vignettes conveys the artistic essence of her subject with clarity, wit, and an elegant economy of means. John Cage, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Spalding Gray and Nam June Paik are among the artists who are captured here with concise drama. Each subject performs in close-up before a stationary camera; Logue heightens this intimate theater with a precise application of subtle electronic effects. Steve Reich's hands are seen in close-up as he claps out a syncopated rhythm; a dance gesture by Arnie Zane and Bill T. Jones is transformed into a sequence of color and texture; Laurie Anderson's face fills the screen as she knocks on her amplified head with unexpected resonance. -- EAI

Duets on Ice, 2020

In anticipation of Laurie Anderson: The Weather, scheduled to open at the Hirshhorn in Spring 2021, internationally renowned artist Laurie Anderson recreates her iconic performance Duets on Ice, streamed live online for the first time from the Museum’s outdoor Plaza. Debuted in New York in 1974, the performance comprises the artist wearing skates frozen into blocks of ice and playing her violin in a series of electronic duets until the ice melts and she loses her balance.

Of the work, Anderson was quoted in Rolling Stone saying, “I talked about the parallels between skating and violin playing—blades over a surface—and about balancing, and what it means to play a duet with yourself.”

Duets on Ice was one of Anderson’s earliest performance pieces. She has since been recognized as one of the most innovative performers in the world. Her incorporation of new technologies and pioneering blend of artistic expression and musical composition has set her apart from her contemporaries for decades.

I see the magic of translating text into music in the work of Cecelia Condit and Laurie Anderson.

I especially appreciate the onomatopoeia of the mouth in Laurie Anderson's music. I also experiment with sound in my work.
